Golden Eagles Earn Capital Sweep

SACRAMENTO--Three wins in less than 24 hours gave Feather River College a sweep in California's capital city on Friday and Saturday.

After a 13-inning win over American River College on Friday (8-6), the Golden Eagles won two more on Saturday at Sacramento City College with 7-1 and 6-3 victories.

Coach Terry Baumgartner's teams returns home with a 6-1 record, still yet to play a home game.

Baumgartner's team played 32 innings in just over 24 hours. Today's 7-1 first game win was standard, but the Golden Eagles went extras again in the nightcap with the 6-3 triumph in 10 innings.

In the opener, freshman Trey Smith went six innings on the hill to earn the win and improve to 2-0 on the young season. He allowed just five hits, walked one and fanned three. Fellow rookie Weston Russell pitched the final three innings to earn the save, his second of the year. The Minnesota native didn't give up a hit, walked one and struck out six.

Smith and Russell had plenty of offensive support. Andrew Lehmann, Quinten Terrell and Jared Stevenson had three hits each while Reed Alexander and Grant McGuire had a pair of base knocks. All three of Stevenson's hits were doubles and he had two RBI. Alexander also had an RBI, double and a stolen base.

In the second contest, Kyle Giovannoni was the starter and gave the Golden Eagles some great mound work. The sophomore left-hander went 5.1 innings and gave up just four hits, two runs, three walks and he struck out seven.

Still, he needed pitching help. Adrian Figueroa spelled him with a flawless 2.2 innings, striking out four. When the game went to the tenth. Zane Denton provided the winning offense with a two-run single to help push the visitors to the 6-3 win. Taisei Watanabe pitched the bottom of the tenth, allowing just one single to earn his first save of the year. Figueroa got the win, his first.

Lehmann had three more hits, giving him six on the afternoon (6-for-11). Stevenson had two, giving him five on the day, as did Denton. The top five hitters in the Golden Eagle line-up had all nine of FRC's hits. Feather River pitching combined for 12 strikeouts in the second game.

Feather will be back on the road this next week, playing in Rocklin to take on Sierra and San Mateo.
